Recently I’ve applied for a part time job at Wagamama. What a name for a jap fast food restaurant. Anyway yesterday was my first day of work. I was pretty excited as this was my first time working abroad.
As usual I reached to work early, changed into my white chef uniform and put on my blue songkok/ kopiah cap on and was ready to go. So i reported to one of my supervisors and waited eagerly for orders.
I guess today was my lucky day. The dishwasher was not at work today. Probably his day off I think. SO guess what??! I took over his place! At first I was like, Oh shit! Then i thought it won’t be that bad afterall because there was like those spray hose kinda thingy to spray at dishes, then u put them on a tray and push it into the dishwasher. That is kinda easy to do.
When I started to think it was easy, I was so wrong. Spraying the dishes was alright but the water was like hot. And you have to work in a fast pace. The dishes comes in non stop I tell you. I started at 4 till 12 midnight. I was washsing plates, bowls, cooking equipments, knifes, miso bowls, cutleries, pots, and so on. It was hell. My hands are crumpled, feel burned constantly and my legs are like broken. When I have a chance to take pictures I will show you guys what I’ve been thru! After the restaurant’s closed. There was MORE washing. All the equipments, cooking stuff, ventilation filters, walls and so on. IT was crazy…but it was a very good experience.
My working place is not that bad actually except the dishwashing part. Anything except the dishwashing. But what do you expect when you work in a kitchen? You have to do everything. But I’m not complaining though. It teaches us how to appreciate money more. It doesn’t come easy. So be careful how u spend your money. Working here has its advantages though:
1. Free food and drink - Nice meals, I must say. The chef cooked me a fried rice and it was super yummy. Got big prawns, chicken, egg, mushroom in it. Damn feeling. Actual price NZ$ 15 bucks. You can get free drinks from the drink counter when you are thirsty. Every now and then there will be extra orders, so they won’t keep the extra food cause it loses its freshness. So free food again for me!
2. Hot waitresses. I think 90% all hot, hot, hot. Eventhough washing dishes sucks, you can wash your eyes constantly as well. Generally the people here are all friendly and cool kinda ppl. All got tattoos, including the waitresses and kitchen staffs.
3. Become more macho. I tell you, everyone working here are all well built. Not as in muscular. But after work when they change, I tell you all muscle one…lean n mean bodies. I WASN’T PEEPING OR ANYTHING AR! So I think I can toughen up too by carrying heavy pots and stuff….hopefully i don’t grow shorter or something. HAHA
4. Can’t think of anymore advantages, besides making new friends. So i guess that sums up my work place.
After work my legs felt like they were broken. Treated myself with some chocolate milk shake at McDonald’s while walking back home. On the way, I have to walk up a killer hill somemore before reaching home and slept like a baby till around 1pm today.
I will be posting pictures in my future entry of my work place. So stay tuned!
